Concrete pool decks in Pasadena
A pool deck is a patio with three extra jobs: it has to stay cool enough to walk on barefoot in August, grip when it is wet, and send splash and rain away from the pool and the house. Concrete handles all three when the finish, the color and the slope are chosen for them.
Pool deck work in Pasadena splits between new decks around new or remodeled pools, extensions that turn a narrow surround into a lounge area, and resurfacing a deck that is sound but stained, crazed or too hot.

Pool deck finishes
| Finish | Underfoot | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|
| Broom finish, light color | Grippy, moderate heat | Lowest; easy to patch |
| Knockdown or spray texture overlay | Cool, soft texture | Recoat when worn |
| Exposed aggregate | Grippy, stone texture | Reseal periodically |
| Stamped and colored | Depends on pattern and sealer | Reseal with non-slip additive |

Heat
Color matters more than material. Light colors stay noticeably cooler than dark ones in full sun, which is why most Southern California pool decks are pale and textured rather than dark and smooth.
Grip
Wet concrete needs texture. Broom, knockdown and exposed aggregate finishes are naturally grippy; stamped concrete needs a pattern with real relief and a sealer with a non-slip additive. The stamped concrete in Pasadena page covers patterns.
Concrete pool deck cost in Pasadena
constructlytools' 2026 Los Angeles guide gives $15 to $20 per square foot for pool decks of 500 to 1,200 square feet. At that rate:
| Deck | Area | Estimated cost |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow surround on a small pool | 500 sq ft | $7,500 to $10,000 |
| Typical backyard deck | 800 sq ft | $12,000 to $16,000 |
| Deck with a lounge and dining area | 1,200 sq ft | $18,000 to $24,000 |

Computed from constructlytools' 2026 Los Angeles rate of $15 to $20 per sq ft (guide updated May 19, 2026). Removing an old deck, new coping and deck drains are extra. Quotes vary by site.
A deck costs more per foot than a plain patio because of the forming around the pool, the drains and the finish. Tearing out an old deck adds $1.40 to $2.30 per square foot in constructlytools' figures, or $2.50 to $4.50 for a heavily reinforced slab, and booking the tear-out with the new pour is often discounted 10 to 18%. Concrete pool deck resurfacing
A deck that is level and not cracking through can usually be resurfaced: cleaned, crack-repaired and covered with a textured overlay in a new color. That changes how the deck looks and feels without touching the coping or the pool. Decks that have settled away from the pool, tipped toward it, or cracked into moving pieces need to come out. The concrete repair and resurfacing page explains how to tell the difference.
Drainage and runoff around a pool
Every pool deck slopes away from the water toward deck drains, a lawn or planting beds, so dirty runoff stays out of the pool and off the house. Where the deck meets the coping, a flexible joint lets the two move separately. A large new deck also adds impervious surface under Pasadena's stormwater ordinance, Chapter 8.70 of the Municipal Code, and the City's stormwater program publishes pool discharge rules for draining the pool itself. The Pasadena stormwater guide covers both.
